The Fort Worth Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated and the Epsilon Alpha Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Incorporated invites you to join our Race Against Bullying and Hazing 5k Run/Walk. Join us as we rally around our students, families, and our community to raise the awareness of bullying and hazing.
This event will be held at the Trinity Park Police & Firefighters Memorial Pavilion on October 19, 2019.
Delta Sigma Theta and Omega Psi Phi are working with several organizations within the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to implement educational outreach initiatives that raise awareness about issues affecting families such as mental health, including bullying. According to Pacer.org, a National Bullying Prevention Organization, more than 1 of every 5 school age students will be bullied this year. An Indiana State University Study from 2011 revealed that 15% of college students reported being bullied and 22% reported being cyberbullied. Hazing is also found to be prevalent not only in college organizations, but in high schools as well. In Texas, it is difficult to get a handle on how often hazing occurs. The Texas Education Agency does not track hazing incidents, nor does it require districts to do so.
Nationwide, 160,000 children stay home from school each day to avoid being bullied - and the effects can be life-long, even tragic. Bullying victims are between 2 to 9 times more likely to consider suicide than non-victims, according to studies by Yale University. Suicide rates have doubled over the past 10 years and bullying is now at crisis levels.
The DIFFERENCE BETWEEN HAZING AND BULLYING is subtle, which is why they are often used interchangeably. The same power dynamics are involved. The same intimidation tactics are used. The only real difference between hazing and bullying is that bullying usually involves singling out an individual at any time and bullying them as a means to exclude them. Hazing, on the other hand, involves including people by having them earn their way into a group or onto a team. Bullying is about exclusion. Hazing is about inclusion.
